This year we are trying out a new history curriculum. After hearing great things about The Mystery of History, I decided to give it a try. I wanted to incorporate The Story of the World (SOTW) since I had several volumes already. I created a lesson planner for The Mystery of History Volume II to help me stay organized this year. It includes a column for coordinating chapters in SOTW along with a blank space for notes on which activities I want to do with the kids. I also included a section to list literature/read-alouds and another section for supplies I need to gather and books I need to get from the library.

Do you have a preference of one history over the other? I’m trying to decide which one would fit best for us and they both seem very similar. Is there a big difference between the two or are they basically the same thing just published by different people? Thanks for the help!

Hi Michele,
Great question! Someone just asked me the same thing over on my YouTube channel. I’m cutting and pasting my reply here…
“I have used both MOH and SOTW. You are correct that SOTW, while including Christianity, does not make a distinction between it and other cultures/religions. MOH definitely tells the story of history from a biblical worldview. Here are a few other differences: SOTW is geared toward younger ages, reads like a story, not a lot of details/facts, much shorter lessons. MOH is geared toward upper elementary and junior high, reads more like a mother telling her kids about events/people/ideas throughout history, lots of details and facts, longer lessons.”
I prefer The Mystery of History, however it is geared toward older children and each volume gets more difficult with longer lessons so it might not be the best fit for families with really young ones.

Would you happen to have MOH volume 1 and 2 Student checklist?
Janelle Knutson says
No, I didn’t get around to making one for the other volumes.
