This will be my second time homeschooling an 8th grader. I’m learning that what works for one child doesn’t always work for another. My oldest daughter (now in college) loved everything we used for her 8th grade year but most of it wasn’t a good fit for her sister. I researched 8th grade homeschool curriculum another time and found some things I think will work much better for my 8th grader this year.
(Some curriculum was given to me for free in exchange for my honest review. This post also contains affiliate links. Read my full disclosure here.)
Here are our 8th grade homeschool curriculum choices. Share what you are using with your 8th grader in the comments below.
Essentials in Writing
For English we will be trying out Essentials in Writing Level 8. This is a writing curriculum with some grammar tied in. I love that it is video based so my daughter will be getting instruction from an experienced writing teacher. We also got the Scoring Service which means I don’t have to grade any writing assignments this year.
I have never used Essentials in Writing before so I will do a full review at the end of the school year and let you know what we thought of it.

Veritas Press Omnibus 1
We are trying out a new literature program this year. My daughter begged me to get her the Omnibus I Secondary course from Veritas Press. It is a self-paced, video course that she does online. She will be reading a lot of great literary works and analyzing everything from a biblical worldview.
I’m really excited about this course as well and will do a full video review and blog post review at the end of the year. You can watch me unbox all the great books that came with this curriculum in this video.
Uncle Sam and You
My daughter also wanted to use Uncle Sam and You this year. It is a civics course from Notgrass that covers American government and the role everyday citizens play in our country. I love that it is from a Christian worldview and my daughter loves the colorful pictures throughout the textbooks.
BJU Press Earth Science
BJU Press Earth Science was our pick for 8th grade science. My daughter is doing the course through the online distance learning program. She really enjoyed BJU Life Science last year with Mrs. Gillenwater and is looking forward to another year of science with her this year.
Pre-Algebra
My 8th grader has had great success with Math-U-See over the years. This year we are continuing with this excellent math curriculum for pre-algebra.
Foundations in Personal Finance
I just discovered that Dave Ramsey has a new Foundations in Personal Finance out for middle school students. I loved the high school edition so I am excited to try out his middle school edition this year with my daughter. We purchased the homeschool version of the course.
