This was one of those years where I had to choose curriculum that wasn’t the best fit for my child. I knew my 4th grader would have loved to do group learning with his siblings, more hands-on activities and lessons that were taught by me. However, I needed curriculum where he (and his other siblings) could work more independently.
I think we came to a good compromise with our 4th grade homeschool curriculum choices this year. He still enjoys the curriculum (although it isn’t his favorite) and I am able to run around and answer questions from each of my school age kids while caring for my little ones at the same time.

Here are my curriculum choices for my 4th grader. You can read them or watch the video below.
4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices
Bible
For Bible, we went with BJU Press Bible 2 via the distance learning program. I chose grade 2 Bible so my 4th grader could do it along with his 2nd grade sister and his 4 year old brother. I think it will be a good fit for all three of my younger ones and I know they will enjoy doing a curriculum together.
Science
Science was one subject I would have liked to do with all of my children but some of my other kids were set on using BJU Press science so I chose to have my 4th grader do BJU science as well. We went with BJU Press Science 4 and he is doing it through the distance learning program.
Heritage Studies
I chose to use Heritage Studies 4 from BJU Press this year. He is doing this one through the distance learning program as well. This was another subject that I think he might have enjoyed me teaching him. He did well with BJU heritage studies last year, though, so I think it will work pretty well for him again this year.
Math
This is the one subject that I believe we got the best fit for my son. We are using BJU Press Math 4 via the distance learning program. The way they present the new material, review past concepts and practice math facts are all super helpful for my 4th grader. BJU Press Math 4 is really the best fit for my son.
Handwriting
My son has already learned print and cursive but just needs some daily practice to improve the neatness of his penmanship. I was going to have him copy passages of scripture and short paragraphs from his history and science textbooks but the BJU Handwriting 4 curriculum came with our grade kit so I figured we’d use what we already had. He will be using the penmanship style I taught him (not the BJU style of writing) as he works through this handwriting workbook. He will not be watching any videos for this. I want handwriting to be short, simple and as painless as possible!
Reading
One of the things I love about homeschooling is being able to teach my children at the pace and level they need instruction in. I don’t have to force them to go too fast or too slow in a particular subject. That is the case this year with my 4th grader. I felt using BJU Press Reading 3 would be a better fit for him than the 4th grade reading program. Since BJU allows you to go up or down 2 grade levels for two subjects when you purchase the grade kit, we decided to go down to 3rd grade for reading and English.
English
For English, we are going with BJU Press English 3. His reading and English are also done through the distance learning program. He did really well last year with the BJU reading and English so I decided to continue with it this year.
Spelling
Spell to Write and Read will be used for spelling this year. This is my favorite curriculum for teaching spelling. It is teacher intensive but with so many other subjects being done through the distance learning program, I have the time to invest in one teacher intensive subject.

Dear Janelle,
Have you used Konos curriculum and do you have an opinion about it?
Thank you for all you do.

I have not used the Konos curriculum before. I know friends who have used it and loved it though. 🙂
