Episode 1: Avoiding Legalism in Your Home
In this episode, I share five suggestions for avoiding legalism in your home. Please don’t turn these into legalistic steps to take, though. These are just suggestions. I’m sure there are many other things we can do, or avoid doing, to avoid the legalism trap.
- Live out your faith in front of your kids.
- Be a safe place for your kids to ask tough questions.
- Make a clear distinction between God’s Laws and your family rules.
- When possible, share the principles from Scripture that led you to the rules you have made.
- Discuss the difference between foundational Christian doctrine and secondary issues.
Scripture Mentioned
- 1 Thessalonians 4:3
- Romans 8:29
- Matthew 22:34-40
- Matthew 23

Awesome job! I grew up in a very legalistic, religious home, and I have sought a lot of Christian counseling in my adult life because of it. Thankfully, I still have my faith in Jesus Christ, when statistically I would have walked away entirely. So, this has been so great to hear your suggestions on ways we can still teach our kids about our faith and the Word without having a legalistic home.

Hi Jenny,
Thank you for listening to the podcast and for sharing your experience in a legalistic home. I praise God that you still have your faith in Jesus Christ and that you have been able to find Christian counseling. Blessings to you and your family.
