Poetry for the Grammar Stage
Poetry for the Grammar Stage is a poetry curriculum from Memoria Press. It is meant to be done over a four year period, usually between 3rd and 7th grade. The poems increase in difficulty as you move through the book but you do not have to do the poems in any particular order. My kids have enjoyed flipping through the anthology book and choosing a poem to study.
Poetry for the Grammar Stage includes the following:
- Anthology book of poems
- Student Guide
- Teacher Guide
The Anthology book includes the poems with black and white illustrations. The Student Guide is the student’s workbook where they will draw a picture of the poem, rewrite the poem, learn new vocabulary, analyze the poem and answer comprehension questions. The Teacher Guide looks very similar to the Student Guide but includes the answers as well as a two helpful resources to assist the parent in teaching poetry. These sections include “How to Teach a Poem” and a glossary of poetry terms.
I have been working through this poetry curriculum with my 5th and 7th graders this year. We are using Poetry for the Grammar Stage as a core part of our literature curriculum therefore we will be working through a large portion of it instead of spreading it out over four years.
So far, we have all enjoyed working through Poetry for the Grammar Stage. It is a great option for homeschool families looking for a poetry curriculum.
