What is The Reading Game?
The Reading Game is a reading program that incorporates memory card games to help kids learn words and read short sentences and stories. The goal is to teach kids dolch sight words geared towards kindergarten and first grade.
The Reading Game includes the following:
- 6 different colored decks of memory word cards
- 6 sets of captioned picture cards
- 6 short books
- A rules and parent guide
Words are learned and memorized through playing memory card games. Then those words are practiced while reading the captioned picture cards and short books. Watch my YouTube video to see how it all works.
The Reading Game Review
The Reading Game claims to be “the only system that can teach your child to read in just one week.” Is that claim really true? I don’t think so. I think The Reading Game is an excellent way to reinforce phonics and reading concepts that your child is learning but I don’t believe that this game can teach your child to read on its own.
I still recommend The Reading Game as a fun way to review reading and phonics with a child. My son loved using The Reading Game and his reading improved over the summer as we used it to reinforce what he had already been learning in our homeschool.
If you are looking for a good phonics and reading curriculum for your child, I would suggest checking out The Logic of English, All About Reading, or Spell to Write and Read. The Reading Game would make an excellent supplement to these other phonics and reading curricula.
