Third Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices
Homeschooling allows me to choose curriculum that fits my children’s unique strengths and weaknesses. It also lets me choose curriculum that fits our family needs. This year I’ll have six children to homeschool so I needed an assortment of curriculum options to assist me in educating everyone at home.
With that in mind, I’ll be using some video lessons and multi-age learning along with one-on-one instruction with my third grader this year.
Family Learning
This year we will be gathering together as a family for morning basket time, lunchtime Bible and logic lessons, and evening family devotions. I shared more about what we are doing during these times and what resources we are using in this blog post.
Group Learning
My third grader will be grouped together with my first grader for history and literature lessons. I’m excited to be using curriculum from Notgrass History with all of my kids this year! My third grader will be using Our Star-Spangled Story along with the literature recommendations.
One-On-One Learning with Mom
In the elementary years, I prefer to teach the English lessons to my kids. My son will be doing one-on-one learning with me for reading, spelling, handwriting, writing, and grammar.
That might seem like a lot of topics to cover for English but we won’t be doing everything each day. We will be finishing up BJU Press English 2 which rotates between writing and grammar throughout the year. Handwriting will be done a few days a week as needed for extra practice.
The only topics I’m planning on covering everyday are spelling and reading.
Here is a list of homeschool curriculum choices for one-on-one learning:
- Reading: All About Reading
- Spelling: All About Spelling
- Handwriting: A Reason for Handwriting Level T (cursive and print)
- Writing and Grammar: BJU Press English 2
Check out my BJU Press English 2 curriculum review.
Independent Learning
With six children to homeschool, I need them to have some independent work. That’s where BJU Press online video lessons come in! My son will get great instruction from a Biblical worldview while being able to work on his own. That’s a win for all of us!
This year my son will be using BJU Press online video lessons for math and science. These are his two favorite subjects and he continually asks to use BJU Press video lessons for them.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to write all these post blogs. I am debating whether I should purchase my son’s BJU third grade instead of 2nd grade. We did first-grade BJU online last year, and he got bored. He knew 90% of the concepts with Grammar, Spelling, and Writing and found the reading books easy to read. Would you recommend purchasing the 3rd-grade Grammar instead of the second?
Janelle Knutson says
BJU Press allows you to purchase a grade kit and then choose up to two subjects to go up or down two grade levels. So you could purchase a grade 2 kit but customize your kit and get grade 3 reading and spelling. Or whichever subjects you feel he is more advanced in. Hope that helps.
