Logic of English
Denise Eide and her team over at Logic of English have created phonics based reading and spelling curriculums for homeschoolers. Parents can choose between the Foundations curriculum for younger students or the Essentials curriculum for older students. A separate handwriting curriculum is also available. Rhythm of Handwriting can be used as a stand alone handwriting curriculum or can be added to the Essential curriculum. The Foundations curriculum already includes handwriting.
Visit the Logic of English website to learn more about what they offer. You can also download a Scope and Sequence for each curriculum option or use their “Help Me Choose” feature to determine which curriculum option is best for your child.
Logic of English Foundations
I used the Foundations curriculum with my two youngest children (both boys). I needed something that was open-and-go (no lesson planning) and all-in-one (included everything my boys needed for English). My active boys also needed something to keep them engaged. Logic of English Foundations was just what we needed!
Foundations is a complete Language Arts curriculum that helps non-readers and emerging readers become great readers. It includes instruction in phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting, and grammar. Simple reading comprehension is also taught as children start reading from the Logic of English Foundations readers. You can download the Foundations Scope and Sequence here to see when things are covered.
The Foundations curriculum comes in four levels: A, B, C and D. Students will either start in level A (if they are brand new to learning to read) or in level B (if they have some phonics knowledge and know letters A-Z). Choose between the cursive or manuscript options as well. You can find an assessment on their website if you need help determining which level to start your child in.
Benefits to LOE Foundations
Logic of English Foundations was a great fit for me and my boys. First, I loved the open-and-go lesson plans. I used LOE Foundations during a hectic season of homeschooling when I didn’t have the time or energy to lesson plan or prepare materials. The Foundations curriculum allowed me to teach my boys with ease.
Secondly, LOE Foundations is an all-in-one Language Arts curriculum. No need to piece together several different curriculums or juggle multiple teachers manuals. I didn’t have to worry about missing any key concepts. I just followed the teacher’s manual knowing everything would be covered in the proper order and time.
Another benefit to LOE Foundations is that it allowed me to move at my child’s own pace. Each lesson could be done in one day or over several days or weeks. We never felt like we were falling behind or rushing to get things done. We worked through the lessons as our time and interest allowed.
Finally, Logic of English Foundations was fun for my boys. It kept them engaged and eager to learn. The wide array of activities held their interest and reinforced what they were learning.
Logic of English also has videos to help busy homeschool moms! Use their free spelling analysis videos or purchase the Foundations online supplement.
Drawback to LOE Foundations
The main drawback to the Logic of English Foundations curriculum is the cost. Each level is a little pricey and some kids will work through more than one level in a year. However, most of the curriculum can be reused with additional children. The student workbooks are the only consumable product.
