Episode 19 | Four Day Homeschool Week
The kids and I did something different this past homeschool year. We tried out a four day homeschool week and loved it! In this podcast episode, I’m talking about why I decided to try a four day school week, how we made it work for our family and how we liked it. I’m also sharing some reasons why a four day homeschool week would not have worked for us in the past.

Hi Janelle,
Thank you for your podcasts. I appreciate and enjoy them. My question is how you successfully go back and forth with different curriculums. I have hesitated from straying to different curriculums (we use BJU press) as I feel like it will disrupt the flow of information. I always feel like using the same curriculum will build upon itself for my kiddos. If you could please elaborate how picking and choosing different subject curriculums each year flows and works together successfully for you. Thank you! 🙂

Hi Lindsey,
That is a great question. There is definitely a benefit to sticking to one curriculum because, as you mentioned, the curriculum will build upon itself and you are less likely to have huge gaps. Math is one subject that I try to keep consistent. I only switch if a child is struggling with a particular math curriculum and I think another option would be better for them. History curriculum is easy to switch between because I know what time periods each child has studied and what they still need to study and can find curriculum to match without feeling like they missed something in history.
What helps me when venturing out to other curriculum, is thinking through a few things:
What are my goals for each child and our family next year? Will our current curriculum help or hinder those goals? If they hinder the goals, then I look for something else.
Is my child struggling with a curriculum? If so, I will consider switching.
Is there an area of learning that my child needs extra attention in? Will our current curriculum help my child next year or do we need to try another curriculum that will emphasize that area/need more?
Taking the time to pray and ask the Lord for direction as I work through these questions and look at new curriculum gives me the peace and confidence to switch things up if that is what I feel the Lord is directing me to do.
I hope that helps. Feel free to comment again if you have more questions.
