Practical Application from Psalm 73
Just like us, Asaph struggled with discontentment, envy, and self-pity as he saw the wicked prosper while he was “stricken all day long” (v 14)). Asaph “envied the arrogant” (v 3) and struggled to understand the discrepancy he was seeing between the life of the wicked and his own life (v 16).
But, in verse 17, we see a change in Asaph’s attitude as he “came into the sanctuary of God”.
Asaph sets his eyes on the Lord and gains a correct perspective. (vv 17-20)
He confesses his sin to the Lord. (vv 21-22)
Then he remembers truth about who God is and what He has done. (vv 23-28)
And finally, Asaph proclaims the goodness of God to others. (v 28b)
Asaph went from despising others and being filled with self-pity to being God focused. He got his eyes off of others and himself and onto the Lord which in turn led to the praise of God and the proclamation of all God had done.
Warren Wiersbe says in his commentary on Psalm 73, “The important thing is not so much what you own or enjoy but where you are going. What good is an easy death if it ushers you into pain? When life seems unfair, take time to worship and get your spiritual vision properly focused. Asaph realized that because he had God as his friend, he needed nothing else. He had more than the wicked and what he had would last forever. God would hold him, guide him, strengthen him, satisfy his spiritual desires and one day, take him to heaven!”
