The middle school years are a time of preparation. It’s a great time to fill in gaps and get your student ready for high school level courses. It’s also a great time to practice record keeping so you have a good system in place when your child enters high school. The middle school years also provide opportunities for spiritual and emotional maturity in your child.

It’s during these years that I like to choose curriculum that allows me the time and energy to invest in my children as they move toward maturity. Sometimes that means more one-on-one instruction in our homeschool. This year it means finding curriculum my daughter can do on her own so that I have more time to invest in her life after our family completes the formal learning part of our day. Below you can find our 7th grade homeschool curriculum choices. Share your middle school curriculum choices in the comments.
7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices
Since I want my 7th grader to work more independently this year, I am choosing some of our favorite curriculum that fosters independent learning. This includes Math-U-See, Notgrass History, and BJU Press video lessons.
Math
For math, my daughter will be using Math-U-See Zeta which covers decimals and percents. This is the last lower grade level before she moves to pre-algebra. While the lower levels are designed for parents to teach the material, my daughter has been able to watch the videos and successfully complete each lesson without my help. I share more about Math-U-See in this blog post and video.
History
Last year, all of my kids (still at home) used Notgrass History with great success. I’m excited to be using it again with my 7th grader. She’ll be using the world history curriculum called From Adam to Us.
Science
BJU Press science courses have always been a hit with my kids. This year my daughter will be using their online Life Science course. I share more about it in this video.
English
I am loving the newer video courses from BJU Press! One of the courses that came out last year was English 7. I’m excited for my daughter to be taking it this year. BJU Press English 7 online covers literature, vocabulary, writing, and grammar with an emphasis on critical thinking from a biblical worldview. The biblical worldview and critical thinking emphasis are two things I love about BJU Press materials.
Bible
I was excited to see that BJU Press updated some of their Bible video lessons. Last year, Bible 7 was redone and it looks amazing! It gives an overview of the Old Testament while providing instruction in Bible study methods and hermeneutical principles.
Spelling
My daughter will be wrapping up her spelling instruction with All About Spelling. In recent years, I’ve really come to appreciate the simple, yet effective, reading and spelling instruction from All About Learning Press.

We are really enjoying Notgrass History! Fun to hear from others who are using it as well and enjoying it as much as us.
