Homeschool Curriculum Choices
I started homeschooling with the preconceived idea that every year of homeschooling would have me teaching all of my children, all of their subjects. I saw homeschooling as a way to build family relationships and invest in my children’s hearts and minds (and it is!) The problem was that as I added more and more children to our homeschool, I became so overwhelmed with providing instruction for so many kids while juggling babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, that I rarely had time to invest in my children’s hearts or just enjoy being with them. I was exhausted and discouraged and ready to give up on homeschooling. I share more about that time in our homeschool journey in this video.
That’s when I switched some of my kids over to video lessons. I felt like a complete failure at first. Then I realized that these video lessons were providing my children an excellent, Christian education while giving me the time and energy to ENJOY being with them. From that year on, BJU Press homeschool curriculum has been a staple in our home. Some years we use BJU Press curriculum for just a few subjects while other years find us using almost all BJU Press materials.
4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices
That brings us to this upcoming homeschool year. I purchased the Grade 4 Online grade kit for my 4th grader this year. Because BJU Press understands that every child has areas of strengths and weaknesses, they allow you to customize your grade kit to fit your child! You have the option of selecting up to two subjects to change. You can move your child up or down two grade levels for those two subjects. I love that about BJU Press curriculum!
I’ll break down each subject my son is taking and what curriculum he is using. But for easy reference, we purchased the Grade 4 Online grade kit and made two substitutions in English and Reading. I’m also adding in All About Reading and Comparative Worldview.
Math
My 4th grader loves BJU Press video math lessons! He’s been using them every year with great success. I did a full review of BJU Press math (with the benefits and drawbacks) that you might want to check out. This year my son will be taking BJU Press Math 4 online. We are excited to see that the video lessons have recently been updated!
History
Last year we used Our Star-Spangled Story from Notgrass History and loved it! But my kids also missed their BJU Press Heritage Studies video lessons. Since Notgrass didn’t have another elementary curriculum for us to use this year, I decided to go back to BJU Press for history. My son will be doing the BJU Press Heritage Studies 4 online. He’s excited to have Mrs. Walker as a teacher again!
Science
BJU Press science has been a go-to science curriculum for my family for years. I love that my kids get solid teaching from a Biblical worldview. This year my 4th grader will be taking BJU Press Science 4 online. Mrs. Overly is one of my kids’ favorite science teachers!
English (Writing and Grammar)
BJU Press has excellent writing and grammar curriculum for the elementary years. I loved teaching my son grammar and writing with BJU Press English 2 last year. You can read my full review of it here. This year I decided to use the video lessons for my son. I’ll miss our one-on-one time together but am thankful he’ll be getting excellent instruction while I help his other siblings. English is one of the subjects that we are switching out to a lower grade level. He’ll be using the brand new BJU Press English3 online curriculum.
Reading
My 4th grader will continue working through All About Reading with me. AAR is sufficient to cover reading however I absolutely love the BJU Press Reading curriculum. Since it comes in the grade kit, we are going to incorporate BJU Press Reading 3 online into my sons reading lessons. Some days we will focus on All About Reading and other days we will use BJU Reading 3. We won’t get through all of Reading 3 but I know what we are able to accomplish will be well worth it. Plus, Mrs. Walker (who teaches Reading 3) is an engaging teacher who brings excitement to reading. We just can’t pass that up!
Spelling
My son will continue his spelling lessons with All About Spelling.
Bible
We will continue having our family Bible reading during lunchtime. I’m also adding in this Comparative Worldview curriculum from Foundation Worldview for my 4th and 2nd graders.
Handwriting
My son has beautiful handwriting in print and cursive so we won’t be using any handwriting curriculum this year. After Christmas, I may add in a typing course for him so he can learn proper typing techniques. If you have a favorite typing course, please share it in the comments!

Hello Janelle, Have you decided on anything for typing? 🙂
Janelle Knutson says
Still deciding. I used typing.com with my last two kids. It taught them to type well but the free version has ads which I wasn’t thrilled about. The paid version is ad free. It’s also a secular typing course which means you never know for sure what your kids are going to be asked to type. It worked okay for us but I’m hoping to find a better option.
