Over the past few years I’ve been trying to switch out the products in my home for cleaner, less toxic ones. After my stroke and additional health problems, I made a bigger push to find clean products for my family.
One of the biggest hurdles for me was all the information out there about healthier living! I felt overwhelmed by all the options and often hesitated to purchase a less toxic product because I was afraid it wasn’t the best one. Then Shawna Holman stepped into my life… or should I say she stepped into my Instagram feed. She shared three simple steps to a less toxic home that I was able to implement at that very moment! I quickly hit the “follow” button on her Instagram page and have continued to be encouraged with her simple, no pressure solutions to removing toxins from my home.
I’m in the beginning stages of this “less toxic” journey but I still wanted to share some of the clean products I use and love right now. Shawna’s book, A Healthier Home, was a great resource to help me make small, simple, budget-friendly changes in our home. (She even has DIY recipes for cleaning products in her book.)
Cleaning Products
I first started my less toxic cleaning journey with a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water. We still use this mixture to clean with from time to time because it’s so budget friendly but it isn’t as friendly on our sense of smell.
Branch Basics has become a favorite cleaning solution in my family. You can use it for multiple cleaning purposes. Just buy the starter kit one time and then purchase the concentrate to refill your bottles when they run out!
When it comes to tackling the buildup in my toilets, sinks, and bathtub, Bon Ami is what I grab. It has non-toxic ingredients that actually work to remove tough, hard-water stains in my toilets and sinks. Plus it does a great job of removing all the gunk in my children’s bathtub.
Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle works great for killing germs when someone in my family is sick or I spill raw chicken juice all over my kitchen counter and floor. I keep a bottle in my kitchen and bathrooms for those times I need to sterilize an area really well.
Molly’s Suds Dishwasher Pods are my favorite clean product for using in my dishwasher. My dishes come out clean without all the added toxins.
I am currently using Ecos Clean & Clear dish soap when I need to hand wash dishes. I’m sure there is an even cleaner option out there but this one is easy to find in my local grocery store.
Clean Laundry Products
I keep laundry simple with just a few clean products. I use Puracy stain remover to get those pesky stains out of our clothes then wash with Molly’s Suds laundry detergent. I also like to add distilled white vinegar during the rinse cycle in my washing machine to help soften fabrics and reduce odor.
Molly’s Suds Oxygen Whitener is a great alternative to bleach. It brightens whites and helps remove stains. You can also use it to clean toilet bowls, porcelain sinks and bathtubs.
I also use these wool dryer balls in the dryer. They act as a natural fabric softener and seem to speed up the drying time.
When my washing machine needs a little cleaning itself, I like to dump some distilled white vinegar and baking soda into my washing machine and set it on the self-cleaning cycle (or hottest setting your washing machine has). Then I just wipe the drum down with a paper towel.
Clean Bathroom Products
When it comes to clean products for my bathroom, Bend Soap Company is one of the first places I go. I love their goats milk soaps and lotions and their deodorants. Bend Soap Company was kind enough to give me a coupon code for you to use! Use coupon code: HOMESCHOOLMOM to get 10% off your first order.
I’ve had a harder time finding hair products that I love and can afford. If you have some good suggestions, let me know in the comments. I’ve been using Desert Essence shampoo and conditioner for several years now and it does a decent job. I’m hoping to try Innersense hair care products in the future but I’m going to have to save up for that purchase!
There are three products from Primally Pure that I use and love as well. Their dry shampoo works wonders on my hair and their deodorant is amazing! I also enjoy using their facial dry brush to help with exfoliating and detoxing.
I’m still on the search for a clean toothpaste I like but I do love the teeth whitening strips from Lumineux. If you have a good toothpaste recommendation, let me know in the comments.
Clean Beauty Products
That brings me to my favorite beauty products and one of my favorite companies…A’del Natural Cosmetics! With an emphases on inner beauty (1 Peter 3:3-4) and a desire to help improve people’s physical health, A’del Natural Cosmetics has a wonderful selection of skin care and cosmetics.
I use and love their Essential skin care line. It has done wonders for my previously dry, red, splotchy face. My skin has never looked better after using the Essential line for a few years now. Their Rose Mask is also a favorite of mine.
A’del Natural Cosmetics also has a great line of non-toxic cosmetics. I use their loose foundation, bronzer, and eyeshadows. Their eyeshadows work great as an eyeliner too!
I’m still researching, learning, and searching for better products for my family. If you have some clean products that you use and love, please share them in the comments!
