Question
If you could only buy one BJU Press video-based course per year of elementary, which would it be for each grade? Which subject and teacher is “can’t miss!”? We have bright kids working at or above grade level, ages 6, 8, 10, 12.
Answer
Several years ago I shared my children’s favorite BJU Press video-based courses and teachers in a blog post. Five years later, some of the video courses have been updated and my kids have taken even more BJU Press online classes, so this question is a great opportunity to revisit our favorite courses from BJU Press Homeschool.
If you can only purchase one video course, I’d suggest utilizing BJU Press video lessons for a subject that you don’t have the time or desire to teach yourself.

You can also combine your kids together for a heritage studies or science course to cut down on the cost. Have them watch the video lessons together and then adapt the assignments and workload for each child. Younger kids could just watch the video and summarize what they learned (in writing, pictures, or orally) while older kids can complete some or all of the assignments.
Many people don’t realize that the BJU Press heritage studies and science courses, for first through third grade, can actually be purchased in a combo kit that gets you both subjects for the price of one.
Favorite BJU Press Online Courses and Teachers
In the elementary years, the science and heritage studies courses are a favorite for my kids. My older kids enjoy courses taught by Mr. Harmon. He has a way of making difficult subjects easier to understand and has a great sense of humor that makes learning more enjoyable.
With that said, here is a list of our favorite BJU Press Homeschool courses and teachers.
Favorite BJU Press Homeschool Teachers
- Mrs. Lawson (for heritage studies)
- Mrs. Overly (for science)
- Mrs. Walker (for reading)
- Mr. Harmon (any course he teaches!)
- Miss Ingersoll (5th grade science and heritage studies)
“Can’t Miss” Courses
Heritage Studies 5 is a “can’t miss” course that almost all of my children have taken. It’s a great U.S. History course that covers the birth of America to President Obama. Miss Ingersoll teaches the course and she is one of my kids’ favorite BJU Press instructors.
Consumer Math is another course that I hope to have all my kids (that haven’t already graduated) take before they graduate from our homeschool. It’s a very practical personal finance course that helps students become good stewards of their own possessions and finances.
