Question
How do you find peace in teaching your child where they’re at versus where they “should be”?
Answer
First, remember that grade-levels and grade-level standards are man-made markers to help teachers instruct large numbers of children at the same time. However, with homeschooling you don’t have to force your child into a man-made standard. You have the amazing opportunity to instruct your child right where God has them and to move at a pace that is best for your unique child.
If your child seems behind, it could be for one of these two reasons:
Most likely, your child is not actually behind! They are right were they need to be! Don’t let the expectations of others discourage you. The goal is not a standard. It is making progress no matter how slow that progress is. Make your focus the forward movement of learning and gaining new skills rather than on meeting a certain standard. Your child is probably right where they need to be!
Another possibility is that circumstances in your family’s life have hindered you from fully investing in a particular area of your child’s education. Acknowledging areas where you have dropped the ball on your child’s education is the first step towards making changes and moving forward.
